This is the first rodeo I’ve had the opportunity to cover, So here goes, Samson Cree Nation hosted the First NANCA sanctioned Rodeo for 2016 at the Ermineskin Panee Agriplex on Feb 13 & 14th, 2016. There were 120 NANCA contestants who came out to compete and accumulate Points & Money to qualify for the NANCA Finals scheduled for September 16 – 18, 2016. The season leaders and top 2 winners of the NANCA Finals will advance to the INFR in Las Vegas in November. There were also 25 Future Steer Riders, Bull Riders, Bare Back and Saddle Bronc Riders participating in the event, these beginner riders range from 5yrs – 30 yrs old and come as far as Saddle Lake and Morley AB. SCN Administration would like to thank Hawk Radio for their PA system. Those are the facts, and here is what I observed; there is unity and camaraderie amongst all contestants, because everything is timed down, fellow contestants and family members assist each other in most every event, therefore there is very little room for error. What I do know now, is that Rodeo families are close knit, it’s based out of honour and guts and sometimes very little glory. but when you see the satisfaction on the faces of contestants as they complete their event, and it doesn’t even matter the category, you know they are doing want they love. and that’s all that’s required.
