Feast behind HBMC for Chief and Council, Interview with new Councilor Vincent “Vinny” Saddleback.
Guide: Vinny what’s the purpose for the feast today?
Vincent: Well, years ago, traditionally, our leaders used to feed the people when they were running. This was just feedback from the Elders. They told us that, traditionally, you should hold a feast because that’s how our way of life used to be and we don’t want to lose that way of life. Individually, because we have seven new Councilors we were going to seven separate feasts to give back. But then we realized that with teamwork, it could be bigger and better if we work as a team. And that’s what we want to show the people. To show the power of teamwork. And not to forget and lose our cultural ways and values. And that is the purpose of this feast. Also, it’s to bless the people, the land, the community. It’s just like a kick start because we have protocol in life, we have to do protocol. And that’s what we’re trying to do, we’re trying to do it right. And with the Elders guidance that’s how we are able to achieve this.
Guide: Are there going to be more community events like this (feast, talks, tea dances, round dances) in the future? Has leadership talked about that yet?
Vincent: We haven’t talked about that yet but it’s in the plan. We want to promote cultural events because really, our motto with this new Chief and Council 2017 Samson Cree Nation is healthy homes, healthy families. The only way we’re going to achieve that is through healing and cultural teachings. We don’t want to lose our way of life being First Nations. In order for that to happen in our community we as leaders need to lead by example. Yes, we are going to do that.
Guide: Are you going to be dancing this year?
Vincent: Yes I will be. I will continue to dance. I will try my best to set a good example for our children.
Guide: So you recommend the nation, the people, come out to events like this?
Vincent: Yes we do and all walks of life too because that’s who we are. The only way we’ll get through anything, through challenges, is to work as a community, like teamwork. But most importantly we’re one big family. That’s what we need to enhance and to empower. And to take pride that we are First Nation people and we are strong.
