Residency Bylaw
On January 4, eight hundred and fourty-nine members voiced their opinion by voting for or against the Residency Bylaw. The bylaw was passed at a community level with 56% in favour. The bylaw now has been presented to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs for review and approval.
The Residency bylaw will govern both applications to live on the SCN Reserve, and also the eviction and removal of persons currently living on reserve.
The Samson Cree Nation Residency bylaw has been reviewed by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada and it has been approved. The Residency Bylaw came into force on February 15, 2012. This is a great step towards positive change in the community. We are now taking steps towards implementation of the bylaw. We are working towards hiring a Registrar of Residents and finalizing the Terms of Reference for the Tribunal. We are NOT taking applications for eviction at this time. Once the staff are in place, notice will be posted and we will inform the community as to the process that will be followed. Please keep a look out for job openings in with Nipisihkopahk Pamîhowin department.
For more information and to review the Tribunal terms of reference you may contact representatives at Samson Cree Nation Justice and Legal Support Office (780) 585-3793 ext 177.
