CULTURE DEPARTMENT
Mâskwacîyîhtowin
Samson Cree Nation incorporates our traditional values and principles through the SCN Culture Division, known in our language as Mâskwacîyîhtowin ; it is comprised of SCN Archives, SCN Museum and Interpretive Centre (Âcimokamik), Mâskwacîs Cree Language & Culture Preservation and the Library. Our mission is to promote, sustain and maintain the social integrity of all aspects of our culture, language and history. It's an indigenized restorative platform that values Mâskwacîs Oral Tradition and Oral History for the benefit our people. We serve to protect the interests of our people, both tangible and intangible, to strengthen and protect our sovereignty and to exercise our inherent right to self-determination by performing varied functions through our programs such as cultural recuperation, repatriation, revitalization, Cree & Syllabic classes, museum exhibits, traveling exhibits and workshops.
Archives
We understand the importance of maintaining and preserving the history and culture of our nation, our cultural property from our perspective and interpretation especially for the generations to come. We have an acquisition policy to archive photographs, documents, articles, rare books, etc. that will assist in building our archives; we are responsible for collecting and care for material which documents our cultural history.
Museum & Interpretive Centre “ Âcimokamik”
Through Âcimokamik our goal is to tell and share the stories of the Mâskwacîs people. We believe that sharing our stories, with our voices and from our perspective will bring a greater understanding about our people. In sharing our history and culture we offer our stories and our ways of knowing, which is otherwise close to invisible. In the past non-native historians, academics, agencies and reports have written our history creating misconceptions and misunderstanding about our place and identity in majority society.
